Leaders of nine business organizations representing tens of thousands of members across the state urged legislators today to increase investment in Michigan’s crumbling transportation system.

The 2012 Urban Mobility Report reveals that the problem of congestion caused drivers in urban areas to travel 5.5 billion hours more, for a congestion cost of $121 billion.

Heavy trucks are not the cause of Michigan’s bad roads. Michigan’s unique axle loading law disperses the load weight to do less damage to our roads.

As stewards of our state’s public works, we are proud of the infrastructure legacy that has been entrusted to us, and we are very encouraged by Governor Snyder’s efforts to repair Michigan’s deteriorating roads.

At last year’s county Farm Bureau annual meetings, Michigan Farm Bureau members identified funding of roads and bridges as a top issue of concern/focus when surveyed about Michigan’s Ag Plan (MAP).

We believe that investing in transportation infrastructure will enhance the ability of our members to get their product to market.

Transportation has never been a more important public policy priority for Michigan than it is right now. It can be argued that how Michigan residents get from Point A to Point B will largely create Michigan’s future.

This is no time for half solutions. Michigan got here because past Legislatures chose to leave roads in disrepair. That has to stop.
