Transportation Institute reveals wasted time in traffic costs
An annual study of driving patterns shows that drivers in the United States “spent 5.5 billion additional hours sitting in traffic in 2011.” The study, prepared by the Texas A & M Transportation Institute, includes a state by state breakdown. In Michigan, Detroit and Grand Rapids made the list.
According to the report, which can be viewed by clicking here, the total cost of congestion for Detroit in 2011 was $2.2 billion, based on delays and excess fuel consumed. For Grand Rapids, the cost was $215 million. The congestion cost per commuter in Detroit was $859; and for Grand Rapids, $501.
