The Daily Telegram: One way or another, state road funding model must grow
The Daily Telegram in Adrian published an editorial Feb. 3 regarding road funding, which addressed the urgency of the problem and the need for legislative action.
Michigan’s road funding has fallen into the same sort of neglect as its pot-holed streets and crumbling bridges.
Twenty years of inaction have made the problem worse. It’s time to act.
Michigan’s road condition problem is undisputed. Many paved roads are in such bad shape some have been reconverted to gravel. A bipartisan state report last March determined it would cost Michigan an extra $1.4 billion per year just to keep 95 to 85 percent of our roads in either “good” or “fair” condition. Now, due to further delay, the estimate is up to $1.6 billion to accomplish the same thing.
That’s $200 million per year, wasted due to inaction….
