Michigan Sheriffs’ Association: Just Fix The Roads
The Michigan Sheriffs’ Association was founded in 1877 and is the oldest law enforcement organization in the state. Because better roads are safer roads, the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association supports fixing our roads now through increased road funding:
Sheriffs:
During his State of the State address, Governor Snyder set transportation funding as a high priority and indicated he will push for immediate action to increase transportation funding.
When it comes to Michigan roads, we are in a crisis situation. Investment in our infrastructure needs to be made sooner rather than later. Better roads are safer roads! There is a clear cause and effect that the better the roadways are maintained, there are fewer accidents and deaths. Our officers are also driiving on these same roadways placing their lives at risk as well. When called upon to drive in an emergency response, lets help keep them safe. Strictly from a public safety perspective, we support the Governor’s call for better roads.
Our roads are deteriorating at a rate of more than $3 million a day, over $1 billion annually. We can’t wait to address this problem.
Because there is only a short window of opportunity early in this session to accomplish this goal, please call your Legislators this week and urge them to enhance public safety and support increased road funding.
Let them know there simply isn’t enough money allocated to maintain our roads. While we continue to seek any possible cost savings, there is no way to cut or reform ourselves out of the more than $1.5 billion annual funding shortfall.
It is our duty to keep our citizens and our officers safe on the roadways. The Michigan Sheriffs’ Association supports “Just Fix the Roads”.
