Michigan Farm News: Can pennies save a road system?
In an article published January 30, the Michigan Farm News stated:
“Michigan roads are crumbling, and money to fix them will continue to dwindle unless a new funding formula is enacted. Michigan Farm Bureau supports changes in how roads are funded, including user fees.”
“Today, however, pennies don’t go very far. Nineteen pennies - the tax per gasoline gallon in Michigan - is not enough, and hasn’t been for years. It’s one reason, according to DriveMi, the website of the Michigan Transportation Team (to which Michigan Farm Bureau belongs), why Wisconsin’s and Ohio’s roads are so much better than Michigan’s. They collect 32 cents per gallon and 28 cents per gallon, respectively, according to 2011 figures.”
