Michigan Transportation Team Applauds Action on Road Funding

LANSING – The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) today thanked leaders in the Senate, specifically Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville, (R- Monroe), Sen. Roger Kahn (R-Saginaw Township) and Sen. John Pappageorge (R-Troy) for introducing legislation in parallel with Governor Snyder’s state of the state address that will provide much needed increased transportation funding.

The bills will give voters an option on how they want to adequately fund infrastructure in Michigan.

“Sen. Kahn’s leadership with the Senate Transportation Task Force last year, and now introduction of these bills, is a step in the right direction for Michigan,” said Mike Nystrom, co-chair of the MTT and executive vice president of the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association. “We can’t wait any longer to provide adequate funding that will ultimately help save money and lives.”

Michigan is losing $3 million each day in lost maintenance and increased wear and tear on roads and bridges, Nystrom said, and it is estimated that one-third of all fatal and serious traffic crashes are due at least in part to poor road conditions.

“This is the single most avoided problem in our state,” Nystrom said. “Now that we have a proposed solution, we look forward to working with members on both sides in the legislature to get the bills passed. Ultimately, we don’t have Democratic or Republican roads; we have Michigan roads, and they are in terrible shape.”

The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) is a broad-based, bipartisan partnership of business, labor, local government, associations and citizens with the common goal of improving Michigan’s transportation infrastructure. MTT is committed to promoting the development and maintenance of a safe, convenient and efficient transportation network that serves the public, private and economic development needs of Michigan.
