Frequently asked question: Toll roads
As we seek additional annual revenue to fund transportation in Michigan, we are frequently asked the following question:
Q: Can’t we just put toll roads in Michigan and solve the problem?
The answer is that most of our highways in Michigan were build and financed originally with federal funds. Federal law prohibits them from being converted to toll roads that benefit the state. Only new highways, or new lanes on existing highways, could be tolled. Although this might be considered as a future option in our toolbox, unfortunately it would not solve our funding shortfall at this point.
